| Londonderry House was a noted Mayfair building, the town house of the Londonderry family (Marquesses of) and it was famous for its lavishness and the history of its entertaining in high society. The Liszt competition (for piano) was given the use of the building when it was due for development as the site of the new Inn on the Park hotel, at Hyde Park Corner. The developers did not think the Lisztians merited the heating being turned on, so everyone (except the performers) was muffled in their winter outdoor coats. Keith Money was sketching the occasion for Tatler magazine, and it was chance that the famous conductor came in and sat opposite, at the rear of the assembly. The colour version would have been done the same evening, from preliminary pencil sketches, the sketches having locked into the artist’s mind all the detail and colouring. | |
