At the turn of the twentieth century, Sydney Lough Thompson left New Zealand to study at the Academy Julian in Paris. In 1902 he visited Concarneau in Brittany and was immediately captivated by the picturesque nature of the countryside where the peasantry, fishermen and farmers fulfilled his nostalgic notions of an ancient Europe. During his brief stay until 1904 he produced numerous works that focused on scenes of the Concarneau market place and quayside. He returned to Concarneau in 1911 and remained there with his wife Ethel until 1933. In the 1920’s Thompson lived close to the harbour entrance which provided him with an inexhaustible array of subject matter. Images of the incessant labour of the fishermen and patient horses on the quay and market place frequently recur in his paintings, portraying the unique character of the area. Similar paintings completed in Concarneau by Thompson are now held in some of New Zealand's most prestigious collections including White Horse on the Quay, Concarneau, 1920 in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Horses on the Quay, Concarneau, 1920 in the Robert McDougall Art Gallery and Sardine Fishers on the Quay, Concarneau, 1925 in the National Art Gallery, Wellington. |
