Barry Lett Multiples 1968 In 1968, Barry Lett, one of Auckland's first commercial art dealers, conceived the idea of multiples to enable artworks to be accessible to a larger public. The pre-production price was set at $35 for the set of twelve, which later increased to $40. Artists were selected by Lett as up and coming yet representative of the time. It is interesting to look at the choices from a 21st century point of view to see where they are today. Although not editioned, these works were only in production for a short time and are therefore of limited numbers. It is believed that about 200 to 250 sets were made. Many, due largely to their accessibility, were perhaps not treated in the manner deserving of an artwork. Consequentially relatively few complete sets have survived. The works represent the artists normal styles and have specifically designed by them for the silk-screen medium. The printing was carried out under the direct supervision of the artist Mervyn Williams. The present work is in perfect condition, newly framed in museum quality mounts and u/v control glass. |
