Nell Tenison Cuneo SWA. British 1867-1953 Nell Marion Tenison was born in London and based in England for most of her career, where she worked as an illustrator and a painter, specialising in portraits. She studied in London at Cope and Nicol’s School of Art, under the guidance of James McNeill Whistler. Tenison made her name working as an illustrator and met her future husband, the American-born artist Cyrus Cuneo at the Atelier Colarossi in Paris. Nell Cuneo exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Paris Salon and the Goupil Gallery. She was elected to the Society of Women Artists in 1917. Their son, Terence Cuneo also became an artist. She illustrated particularly girls’ and women’s magazines. A number of girls’ books, such as Angela Brazil’s A Terrible Tomboy 1915 count among the prominent. Following her husband's death in 1916, she travelled widely throughout England. She later lived at St. Ives in Cornwall and at Shamley Green at Surrey. |
