Percival Alexander LEASON, Australian 1889 - 1959 The son of a farmer, Leason was born in 1889. At seventeen he went to Melbourne to start a five year lithographic apprenticeship with Sanes & McDougall. He attended evening classes at the National Gallery of Victoria (1907 - 1910) and also life classes at the Victorian Artists Society. Lloyd Rees worked beside Leason in the Smith and Julius Studio, 24 Bond Street, (the home of Art in Australia). In 1919 Leason worked as a cartoonist forThe Bulletin . In 1920 he illustrated Angus and Robertson's publication of a special edition of works on Henry Lawson. Leason was a frequent participant in the painting weekends with Roland Wakelin and John Young at the Austinmer Cottage. He was one of the most sought after draughtsmen, cartoonists and illustrators of the 'twenties'. He later became the chief cartoonist of Melbourne's short lived Punch . In 1924 he transferred to Table Talk. In 1939 Leason left Australia for New York before settling on Staten Island. He became a member of the National Executive Board of American Artists Professional League, of the Salmgundi Club and an elected member of the Royal Art Society in London. Leason achieved considerable success in America painting, illustrating and teaching and died in the USA in 1959.
