Harold KNIGHT RA, ROI
British 1874 - 1961

Harold Knight was born in Nottingham in 1874, the son of William Knight, an architect and amateur painter. He trained at the Nottingham School of Art, where he is said to have been the star student. It was there that he met his future wife Laura (née Johnston). His painstaking studies from the model and dedicated hard work had a powerful effect upon Laura. Parentless, and in real poverty, she was greatly encouraged by their friendship. After leaving the Art School in 1893, Laura set up a studio with the intention of earning a living as an artist, whilst Harold studied for several months at the Laurens Academy in Paris. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1896 and had his first joint exhibition with his wife, Laura Knight in 1906 at the Leicester Galleries.

Until 1907 the Knights lived at Staithes, Yorkshire, where Harold painted landscapes, seascapes and interior scenes depicting members of the local community. They made several visits to Holland which enlarged their knowledge of the Dutch Masters and excited their interest in landscape. Harold was particularly impressed by the interiors of Vermeer.
