Terrick John WILLIAMS RA, RI, ROI. Liverpool 1860 - 1936 Plymouth Terrick Williams was one of the most popular marine and landscape painters in Britain during the 1920s and ‘30s and is now regarded as one of the finest English Impressionists. Most art galleries claiming a Modern British section include a Terrick Williams amongst their collection. It has been acknowledged that Terrick Williams was exceptional in his ability to translate the effects created by light and shade onto canvas. Les Tuileries, with the sunshine filtering through the trees, demonstrates a fine example of this effect. Les Tuileries displays William's interest in the events of the day, depicting Parisian women during The Great War, gathering to knit socks for their soldiers who were away fighting. A Grey Morning, Audierne is also an example of his ability to capture light and shadow. The artist found seascapes to be an attractive challenge and stimulus. His interest in Social Realism (the busy lives of working people) was a subject he continued to explore throughout his career. Writing for The Artist in 1935 on ‘Harbour and Fishing Subjects’ Williams makes a comment that is very pertinent to A Grey Morning, Audierne. "I have always... been keenly interested in watching the busy life of fishing towns and fisher folk, and the arrival, departure and movement of boats, and in noting the effects of moving water with its fascinating reflections." Succeeding Sir David Murray as President of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1933, Terrick Williams was described by Martin Hardie RI as 'among the chief of the British marine painters of the day'. A memorial exhibition of his work was held at The Fine Arts Society in London in 1937. |
