Claus Edward FRISTROM New Zealand 1864 - 1942 Edward Fristrom born in Sweden, was the son of a Lutheran minister. His brother Oscar Fristrom was a portrait painter and the founder of the Queensland Art Society. Edward was entered as a naval Cadet on a Swedish training ship, but deserted whilst in Australian waters and joined his brother in Brisbane. Having spent time in both Sydney and Tasmania, Fristrom arrived in Auckland, New Zealand in 1903 and exhibited with the ASA 1903-09. he then left New Zealand to return to Brisbane to visit his brother. On his return to New Zealand in 1911 he visited Wellington and exhibited with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in 1912 and then taught at Elam from 1911-15. Again, Fristrom exhibited with the ASA from 1911-15. He later visited his friend Marcus King in Wellington around 1916/17 and exhibited again with the NZ Academy of Fine Arts before leaving for the USA. Having painted in Australia, Fristrom shared the more adventurous hybrid neo-impressionistic style tempered with the art nouveau decorativeness of his Australian contemporaries. He had a preference for purplish colours and broad flat brush strokes. Fristrom discovered that this style did not quite gain the same level of acceptance in New Zealand as it did in Australia. Although he travelled extensively through new Zealand painting its varied landscapes, Fristrom was also a very capable portrait painter. While other Auckland painters tended to merely record the Maori's physical appearance, Fristrom went deeper in attempting to reach the personality of the sitter. Fristrom later died at Carmel, California. He is represented in major public collections in New Zealand including the Turnbull and Hocken libraries. |
